Lewis Hamilton ‘Devastated’ After Accidentally Hitting Groundhog During Canadian GP Practice
Seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton expressed heartbreak and remorse after accidentally hitting a groundhog during a practice session at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.

The incident occurred during FP2 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, a track famously known not just for its high-speed straights but also for the occasional appearance of local wildlife — particularly groundhogs. While Hamilton was pushing his Mercedes through the final sector of the circuit, the small animal darted across the track and was struck at high speed.
“It’s just heartbreaking,” Hamilton said after the session. “I saw it last minute and there was absolutely nothing I could do. I’m devastated. I love animals, and this just really upset me. It completely threw me off.”
Track marshals were quick to respond, and the session continued without delay, but the mood in the Mercedes garage was noticeably somber.
Wildlife on track is not an uncommon sight in Montreal. In past years, several drivers have narrowly avoided animals during sessions. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, located on Île Notre-Dame, is surrounded by water and natural habitats, which occasionally leads to these unfortunate encounters.
The FIA and race organizers have said they are reviewing procedures to prevent further incidents. “We do our best to monitor and safeguard the track, but sometimes these animals move so quickly it’s hard to prevent,” said a spokesperson for the Canadian GP.
Despite the emotional toll, Hamilton remained focused on the weekend, finishing the day within the top five on the timing charts. “I’ll try to reset and get my mind right for qualifying. But yeah, this one hurt.”
Fans have taken to social media both to support Hamilton and to call for more effective wildlife management around the track.
