Perez once shared what Tiger Woods told him about whether he plans to play on PGA Tour Champions

There seemed to be an incredible number of major wins still ahead of Tiger Woods when he lifted his 14th title at the 2008 US Open. So it meant so much more to the fans when he won that 15th major at the 2019 Masters.

Most golfers would have likely given up a long time ago had their body been put through what Woods has dealt with over the last 15 years. However, the 49-year-old has proved time and time again throughout his career that he is the most remarkable competitor, so it is hardly surprising that he continues to work hard on his game.

It is hard to see Woods winning again on the PGA Tour unless he can catch the break with his fitness. But perhaps there are still several more chapters to be written on his career.

Woods will turn 50 before the end of the year, and with that, he will be eligible to compete on PGA Tour Champions.

There are some outstanding players on the senior tour, including his good friend Steve Stricker. But there does appear to be the potential for Woods to dominate on that stage, particularly as he does not necessarily have to walk the courses they are playing on.

The question is whether Woods wants to play on that tour. But speaking to Subpar in 2020, Pat Perez suggested that he had spoken to Woods about the prospect of continuing his career on the Champions Tour.

“I hope he can stay healthy for a little bit longer, I’d love to see him get that 19th [major]. I think he’s going to get the 83rd [PGA Tour] win pretty soon. I think it would be within a year that he gets that 83rd win, this calendar year of ’20. But the 19 would be really unbelievable,” he said.

“I was actually talking about the Champ Tour, and I said would you ever think about playing? And he said, ‘there’s only one thing I want’, he goes, ‘I want that US Senior Open trophy’, because then he has them all. He has every USGA trophy. But think about that, that would be unbelievable to have the US Junior, US Am, US Open, Senior Open, which nobody has.”

Woods has been through a lot since 2020, including a serious car accident. However, his handful of appearances in 2024 show that he is not yet done. And if he gets a target in his sights – such as the US Senior Open – it is hard to imagine him letting that go without a fight.

It would be huge for PGA Tour Champions to have Woods involved. One of the biggest surprises of 2024 came at the PNC Championship where Woods and his son Charlie were battling with Bernhard Langer and his son Jason.

Neither Woods or Langer are anywhere near the peak of their powers. And yet, it was one of the most entertaining events between the Tour Championship and the end of the year. It certainly whet the appetite for the idea of Woods prolonging his career away from the PGA Tour.

So it would be fascinating to see what impact Woods playing on the Champions Tour would have.
