It is fair to say that The Sentry has sparked plenty of debate amongst golf fans after Hideki Matsuyama broke the PGA Tour scoring record on his way to victory at Kapalua.

If players were hoping for a gentle start to the new PGA Tour season, they were handed a pleasant surprise at The Sentry, with the Plantation Course proving to be the gift that kept on giving over the course of the week.

Hideki Matsuyama posted the lowest 72 hole score in PGA Tour history in Maui, as he reached 35 under par, finishing three shots clear of Collin Morikawa. Elsewhere, 20 under par was only good enough for a tie for 24th, while no player who finished the tournament found themselves on a worse score than three under par.

Smylie Kaufman claimed a scratch handicapper would shoot level par in the calmer conditions of Friday and Saturday. And some fans had a real problem with the Plantation Course hosting a PGA Tour event.

One of those who was not able to capitalise on the kinder conditions was Justin Thomas. The 31-year-old finished in a tie for 26th on 19 under par, with his highlight coming on Sunday.

Thomas posted the low round of the day, as he shot a 63 to move himself 15 spots up the leaderboard.

The two-time major winner has since taken to Instagram to reflect on the week. And he responded when a fan asked whether he enjoys the kind of tournaments where 35 under par is required to win.

How Thomas was one of the biggest surprises from The Sentry

Thomas was perhaps one of the biggest surprises from The Sentry, as the hopes appeared to be extremely high for the American heading into the 2025 season. He came close to winning the ZOZO Championship, while he led the Hero World Challenge going into the final round before Scottie Scheffler left the field behind him.

So it was perhaps a little concerning to see him never in the mix at Kapalua. But clearly, The Sentry is something of an outlier, particularly when conditions are so favourable.

Those who had an underwhelming week will have little problem simply marking it down as an anomaly and trying to move on swiftly. gives his thoughts on the Kapalua course after fan asks if he actually enjoyed playing at The Sentry
